date night and mother nature.
Friday evening, Dave and I had a date night... complete with the dog, lots of heat, airplanes, yummy tacos, a probable-but-unfortunately-not Tiger Woods sighting, some friends, a few settlers, and a really bad storm.
The day started out hot. We were pretty close to hitting a record high for DC (according to reports, we rang in at 104 and the record is 106). I had the day off, so Anz and I hid in our cool basement for most of the day. When Dave got off work, we braced ourselves for the heat and headed out to Gravelly to see the planes fly in and out of National. If you're ever in the area and get the chance, grab a picnic basket, a soccer ball, and go!
We then had a hankering for Taco Bell and the new Doritos tacos. We made our way to the mall and ate some tacos in the car, in the parking garage. We did this mostly so that we wouldn't leave Anz in the car alone in the heat. Our verdict on the Doritos tacos... YUM! When I was walking back from Taco Bell to the car, I swear I saw Tiger Woods. He was in town this week for a tournament, so it wasn't impossible... but it wasn't him. I ran to the car to tell Dave who then went in a said nope. I went back in to double check and yea... not him.
Later that night, we went to a friends house to hang out and play some Settlers. During one of the games, we notice the wind blowing pretty strongly but didn't really think anything of it. Then the rain came pouring down. And lighting decided to have a little dance party. Then it stopped. By the time we left a couple hours later, trees had fallen and the streets were a disaster. On the drive home, we saw several cars with huge tree branches on top of them and the next day saw people dealing with the aftermath. So many people are still without power (not expected to be back until Friday night). With the heat we're having, I just pray that people are safe this week and I'm so thankful that we made it through safely.
Update: I just learned that the storm is called a derecho. CNN gave a pretty good explanation and a few stats about last Friday's derecho.
